As part of Lot 1 of the School Park Modernisation Programme for Secondary Education, the intervention in this iconic high school consisted of the remodelling and rehabilitation of the existing buildings, the construction of new buildings and the arrangement of outdoor spaces.
The project included the meticulous restoration of the existing building, the construction of a modern canteen and a multi-sports pavilion, as well as the remodelling of the different wings of the main building and the outdoor spaces.
As this is a listed building from the 20th century, the intervention methodology required absolute respect for the original architectural ensemble, rehabilitating and revitalising the entire structural system with specific actions, prioritising the repair of damaged elements over the removal and replacement of materials.
The modernisation work covered several key areas, such as earthworks, structure, finishing and infrastructure. Specifically, significant improvements were made to the water and gas supply networks, sanitation, rainwater drainage, electricity, telecommunications and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems These interventions aimed not only at rehabilitating and restoring existing spaces, but also at creating new areas adapted to contemporary educational requirements.
As with interventions in other schools, one of the biggest challenges of this operation was reconciling works execution with the normal running of the school, guaranteeing safety and minimising disruption for all parties involved.
The primary objectives of this project were to improve safety and accessibility conditions, as well as to provide the school facilities with all the necessary services to better comply with the school requirements.
This rehabilitation project not only revitalised a historic building of great importance, but also ensured that the Liceu Passos Manuel continues to be an educational and cultural landmark for future generations, remaining faithful to its legacy while adapting to contemporary needs.
