The contract included earthworks, structure, finishing and all the necessary specialities: water and gas supply, sanitation, rainwater drainage, electricity, telecommunications and HVAC. In addition to the new building, the exterior arrangements involved both buildings and a portion of the public domain, creating a cohesive and integrated space.
The new I3S building stands out for its bold and functional architecture, made up of two independent bodies. Body A, with an area of approximately 45x112m², consists of five levels (-2, -1, 0, 1 and 2), while Body B, which connects the new building to the existing one, has an underground technical area and a single floor above ground.
I3S was designed to provide the best working conditions for researchers, with various laboratory areas, including a vivarium, common areas, as well as administrative, technical, service, support and maintenance areas. The basement, where the vivarium is located, is delimited by retaining walls that withstand earth thrusts, requiring special coverings of the reinforcement and joints in concrete to guarantee the watertightness and humidity control of this place.
This intervention represents an important milestone in the research infrastructure of the University of Porto. In addition to being a reference point in modern architecture, this new space aims at strengthening I3S as a global leader in scientific research.
With these state-of-the-art facilities and a structure designed for maximum functionality, I3S is prepared to face the challenges of the future, keeping the University of Porto at the forefront of biomedical research.
