As one of the most important public works undertaken in Portugal, the iconic Vasco da Gama Bridge is the largest in Europe, measuring more than 12 thousand metres in length and with 6 traffic lanes, the bridge was constructed on the east side of the city of Lisbon and links the capital with the municipality of Alcochete.

The project involved the construction of the road bridge together with the respective access roads: Nós de Sacavém and the EN10 ring road and the northern access route. The bridge itself is composed of five structures covering its entire length: the Northern Stretch, the Expo Stretch, the Main Bridge, the Central Stretch and the Southern Stretch.

The principle bridge is a cable stayed structure while the suspended platform is composed of slabs laid on transversal steel beams that are borne on two longitudinal concrete beams. The foundation blocks, built behind cofferdams, are laid on 44 piles that are sunk to depths greater than 65 metres. The piles were made using floating platforms, while the concrete was mixed and poured from a floating plant with a mobile pouring arm.

On the main viaduct there are 5 extensions to the platform that permit the emergency parking of vehicles.
