Given the great thickness of the alluvium (7 to 9.5 ml), the construction was founded on piles and carried out on the site of the old dock Doca dos Olivais, from an embankment built on alluvial soils (mud and muddy sand) with significant thicknesses that rest on the Miocene substrate.
In order to carry out the work, it was necessary to dredge the muddy alluvium and build a hydraulic embankment.
This embankment was studied by the IST Geotechnics Department, which characterised its dynamic properties using resonant column tests. In this study, in order to avoid liquefaction in the event of seismic action, vibroflotation of the sands was recommended so as to achieve adequate levels of compactness.
The implementation of the Oceanarium included the provision of the following services and supplies:
- Design, preparation and execution of the Oceanarium project and its developments;
- Construction, supplies, equipment and assembly, as well as its placement, installation and testing;
- Supply, transport, reception and placement of the animals;
- Temporary maintenance of the animals and their facilities;
- Provision of management and operation services for Animal Husbandry and Plant Operations;
- Provision of selection, recruitment and training services for Oceanarium staff to carry out duties related to Plant Operations and Animal Husbandry.
