The project consisted of the construction of the Nova Ponte movable bridge 110 m long and refurbishment of the access roads for the bridge.
The movable bridge connects Matosinhos and Leça and is an integral part of Leixões Port, known as the most important port facility in the north of Portugal, servicing a wide range of industrial and commercial activities.

The project consisted of the following works :

- Demolition of the existing structures;

- Works for the reconstruction of the overpasses;

- Foundation structures for the movable bridge;

- New mobile bridge with a metal structure;

- New links from the overpasses to the bridge;

- Extension to the overpasses and pedestrian cover;

- Vertical access for pedestrians;

- Surfacing, drainage of rainwater, walkways and guard rails;

- Electrical, telecommunications, security, signalling and monitoring installations.

With the project already underway, the following situations came to light requiring correction or modification:

- Substantial modification to the assumptions for the project for the hydraulic systems for the movable bridge and its functional concept in general which led to a process of drafting of said elements in the final design;

- Interruption of traffic on the movable bridge at a date much later than that provided for in the Final Works Plan;

- The adapting of the plan to local restrictions which delayed the project.
