The project, located in Douro Interior, comprised general road works and engineering structures for the subconcession in the following sections:
- IP2 – Vale Benfeito / Junqueira (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures and Special Engineering Structures (Bridges and Viaducts));
- IC5 – Murça (IP4) / Pombal Junction (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures and Special Engineering Structures (Bridges and Viaducts));
- IC5 Pombal Junction / Nozelos (IP2) (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures and Special Engineering Structures (Bridges and Viaducts));
- IC5 Nozelos (IP2) / Mogadouro (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures);
- IC5 – Mogadouro / Miranda do Douro (Duas Igrejas) (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures and Special Engineering Structures (Bridges and Viaducts));
- IP2 – Macedo de Cavaleiros / Vale Benfeito (General Works and Standard Engineering Structures).
IP2 – Vale Benfeito / Junqueira – Lot 1 (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures and Special Engineering Structures (Bridges and Viaducts))
General Works:
28.5 km of expressway with a bidirectional carriageway (2x1) with two lanes (one in each direction), 3.75m-wide each, and 2.5m shoulders, with additional lanes for slow vehicles on some uphill sections.
Highlights: Bornes Tunnel, which consists of a single gallery constructed using the top-down method. It has a length of 100 m, a width of 16.5 m and a minimum clearance of 5.5 m. The structure consists of a top slab supported by Ø1000 pile walls and an intermediate level of bracing that follows the longitudinal gradient. The reinforced concrete top slab has a structural height of 1.2 m.
Special Engineering Structures:
9 viaducts were constructed, 2 of which 2 in situ with launching girders and 7 prefabricated with box girders and I-beams.
Standard Engineering Structures:
15 overpasses and 9 underpasses were constructed. The decks of the overpasses were generally built using box girders and I-beams with pre-slabs, with in situ concrete casting using the traditional method. The underpasses were constructed with "Matière" structures and I-beam decks supported on abutments.
IC5 – Murça (IP4) / Pombal Junction – Lot 6 (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures and Special Engineering Structures (Bridges and Viaducts))
General Works:
Construction of a 28.5km-long road with a 7m profile, with two lanes (one in each direction) and 1.5m shoulders, with additional lanes for slow vehicles in uphill direction.
Three junctions were built to connect with existing roads. At the start of this IC5 subsection, the first junction joins the Pópulo junction with the IP4.
Standard Engineering Structures, Overpasses, Underpasses, Culverts and Wildlife Crossings:
31 standard structures were built, mostly prefabricated using Matière systems, Box Culverts, I-beams and box girders complemented with pre-slabs.
Viaduct V1N was constructed on the main road with a length of about 600m and a height of 22m at the highest pillar. This viaduct was prefabricated using I-beams and pre-slabs.
Highlights: Bridge over the Tua River. This is a high monolithic bridge with a central span of 220m, the second largest built in Portugal. The two end spans of 140m each complete the deck with a total length of 500m. The highest pillar is about 85m and the deck consists of a single-cell prestressed reinforced concrete box girder constructed from the end segments using the balanced cantilever method.
IC5 Pombal Junction / Nozelos (IP2) – Lot 7 (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures and Special Engineering Structures (Bridges and Viaducts))
The section of the Complementary Itinerary IC5 – Pombal Junction / Nozelos (IP2) is part of the stretch connecting IP4, near Pópulo, to IP2 in Lodões and has a length of about 24 km. Its geometric typology is a single lane cross-section with an additional slow lane over approximately 5.7km.
This section consists of two junctions connecting to the road network: Ansiães junction, which provides access to Carrazeda de Ansiães, and Vila Flor junction, configured as a semi-cloverleaf and linking to Vila Flor via a 1.7km access road.
This parcel comprises two viaducts, with lengths of 235m and 335m, and 26 reinstatements of existing roads, associated with 26 standard engineering structures (11 overpasses, 9 underpasses and 6 agricultural crossings).
The route of this section was developed with geometric characteristics suitable for a standard base speed of 100 km/h.
Among the 26 Standard Engineering Structures, 13 feature three-span decks with prefabricated I-beams, while the remaining are either vaulted or rectangular prefabricated structures. Three structures use indirect foundations with in situ bored piles.
The decks of the two viaducts were constructed using an upper launching girder. These viaducts' pillars were constructed using climbing formwork.
IC5 Nozelos (IP2) / Mogadouro – Lot 8 (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures)
Standard Engineering Structures:
10 Overpasses, 4 Agricultural Crossings and 1 Pedestrian Crossing were constructed.
IC5 – Mogadouro / Miranda do Douro (Duas Igrejas) – Lot 9 (General Works, Standard Engineering Structures and Special Engineering Structures (Bridges and Viaducts))
This project included earthworks, drainage, paving, landscape integration, noise barriers, fencing, telecommunications infrastructure, street lighting, signage and safety, guardrails, reinstatement of affected utilities, underpasses, culverts, wildlife crossings and a cycleway crossing.
The section of IC5 – Mogadouro / Miranda do Douro (Duas Igrejas), which is part of the Douro Interior Subconcession, is located in the interior of the Northern Region of Portugal, within the NUT III Geographic Unit – Trás-os-Montes sub-region, specifically in the municipalities of Mogadouro and Miranda do Douro. This IC5 section is 37.266km-long and starts near Mogadouro, continuing through the IC5 – Nozelos (IP2) / East Mogadouro Junction section and ending near Duas Igrejas, in the municipality of Miranda do Douro.
IP2 – Macedo de Cavaleiros / Vale Benfeito – Lot 10 (General Works and Standard Engineering Structures)
This project involved a set of improvement measures to be carried out along a 10 km section of the IP2, between Macedo de Cavaleiros and Vale Benfeito, within the Douro Interior Subconcession.
These improvement measures for included the construction of a Road Technical Channel, lighting at the Macedo de Cavaleiros and the EN216 junctions, installation of noise barriers and guardrails, pavement improvement using cold-applied bituminous microsurfacing, redesign of horizontal and vertical signage, and improvement of drainage elements.
