Governo de Portugal
This project started in September 1988 and ended in September 1992. The construction of Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB, meaning Cultural Centre of Belém in Portuguese) was based on the need for an architectural facility that could host the Portuguese presidency of the European Union in 1992 and, at the same time, remain a dynamic hub for cultural and leisure activities. Its final design was decided in early 1988.
After hosting the presidency of the European Union, it was transformed into a cultural and conference centre in 1993.
The architects consortium Manuel Salgado (Portugal) and Vittorio Gregotti (Italy) was selected in an international competition, among 57 projects received. Of the five modules presented in the project, only three were built: the Meeting Centre, the Performing Arts Centre and the Exhibition Centre.
