In order to extend the existing Évora line, a new intermediate section, known as the Freixo-Alandroal subsection, was built from scratch. Connecting the current eastern line to Spain over a total length of 78.1 km, this section was entirely managed by Mota-Engil Engenharia.

The works involved excavations up to 25.4 m high and embankments up to 16.7 m high. The foundation structure of the railway track was also constructed, comprising crushed aggregate of variable granulometry of limestone origin for the capping layer and of granite origin for the sub-ballast layer.

During the project, the entire drainage system was built, comprising circular and rectangular hydraulic passages, platform ditches, crest ditches and bench ditches, as well as collectors and toe-of-slope trenches.

The construction involved 51 technical blocks to provide a stiffness transition between the standard railway embankment and the reinforced concrete structures. Slope stabilisation and protection structures were built using drainage layers and soil nailing systems, with mesh or shotcrete.

The restoration of roads and paths, as well as the construction of service roads and parallel paths along the work area, signalling and telecommunications infrastructure, were also part of this project.

Overburden excavation in embankments, sanitation works with a volume of 171,200 m³, 10 special engineering structures (viaducts and bridges), and 16 regular engineering structures (overpasses, underpasses and agricultural crossings) were carried out.

The signalling and telecommunications infrastructure built along the entire railway line consisted of 3 HDPE Ø110 mm pipes (for signalling component) and 3 HDPE Ø40 mm single-wall pipes (for telecommunications components). Additionally, a Technical Building was constructed to house the technical rooms for Railway Signalling and Telecommunications (S&T) and to support their operation.

Finally, the project included the construction of catenary mast foundations, return current systems, earthing and protective devices.
