The Sines Thermoelectric Power Plant was the country's largest energy producer for a significant period of time. It produced around 294 TWh of energy while it was in operation, supplying a third of Portugal's population. The imposing chimneys, 225 metres high, marked the landscape of Sines for over 30 years.

The project's purpose was to build the industrial chimney and the intake and discharge pipes for the cooling circuit.

The cylindrical chimney with a reinforced concrete shaft was built in two distinct phases. The first phase was up to 149 metres high, with a platform for employees to rest and for locking the formwork. The second phase was carried out up to the final height of 225 metres.

The intake and discharge pipes, approximately 1,800 m long, were made up of 2.15 metre diameter steel core reinforced concrete pipes, with a 0.11 metre thick outer and inner concrete layer.
