The Hydroelectric Power Station on the River Tua is on the right bank of the River Douro, approximately 120 km to the East of the city of Porto. The dam is located in a hydrographic basin of 3809 km² and creates a reservoir which, at full storage level (nivel de pleno armazenamento – NPA - 170) has a volume of 106.1 hm³ and a flooded area of 420.9 ha.

The dam is in a deeply embedded valley within a granite massif with a low level of alteration that is downstream of the installation, just beyond the EN 212 road bridge in the direction of the mouth of the River Tua.

In addition to a reduction in the incline of the slopes and extension to the depth of the valley, there was an alteration to the massif from granite to schist formations.

The principle elements comprising this development were:

  1. - Concrete dam;

  2. - Central shaft and compact substation;

  3. - Subterranean hydraulic system;

  4. - Laying of access roads;

  5. - Top of the dam;

  6. - Pier water intakes;

  7. - Return nozzles;

  8. - Construction of a temporary diversion on the EN 212.

In the course of the project, a channel was excavated on the river-bed between the return and the mouth of the River Tua, the construction of an observation and control point, the works for the temporary river diversion comprising of two cofferdams (one upstream and one downstream) and an offshoot on the left bank.
