Innovation in precasting for railway bridges

Currently, the precasting industry does not take advantage of the potential offered by HPFRC (high-performance steel fibre-reinforced concrete) and UHPFRC (high-performance steel fibre-reinforced concrete) materials.

This project aims to design new products for railway bridge decks taking advantage of the potential offered by these materials. HPFRC will be used to design and develop precasted stringers, without reinforcement in the current zone, and transverse beams of the modular beam-column system.

What we do

Our activities

The main overall objective of the project is the development of new precast concrete products for railway bridges/viaducts, taking advantage of the potential offered by the new HPFRC and UHPFRC materials to address the problems identified, and also the validation of these new products so that their technical viability is unquestionable:

- Create a new system to materialise the continuity between the deck chords of bridges/viaducts.
- Design of a framed column solution.
- Design of a new range of precast concrete products.
- Design of a new connection system between prefabricated column segments.

Coordinating the different phases of the project in order to achieve the objectives effectively and efficiently.

The Team

The consortium

The project team has all the necessary competences to achieve its objectives. The main promoter (Mota-Engil, Engenharia e Construção) has extensive experience in the construction and rehabilitation of railway structures and in concrete precasting. The second co-promoter (Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, FEUP) brings together scientific and technical expertise in all the areas involved in the project, and essential laboratory infrastructures for the development of the work.
